Looming Lady Blog
In honor of Katie’s dog jacket last week, I made gloves this week. For me. The temperatures have been dipping into freezing degrees but she doesn't mind. I worked on the 24 peg round loom. The pattern used less than half a skein of yarn, and a tiny amount of color B. I also used a yarn needle. Squares. Make 2 per glove. *Double e-wrap 6 pegs with color A. Turn, knit back, turn, knit back. Bring row 1 up onto the pegs. E-wrap all around. Note that you have 3 loops on each peg. Lift the bottom loop over the top 2 loops all around. Change colors. E-wrap all around. Knit off bottom loops all around. Note that you can weave in your tail from the previous round into this round so it’s not loose. Change colors again to A. E-wrap all around. Knit off bottom loops all around. E-wrap all around. Knit off bottom 2 loops all around. Cut off a long tail. Pull the tail through each stitch on every peg and pull the stitches off in a drawstring method. Gently shape into a square. Note, this will almost have a butterfly effect. It’s pretty, but not a full square. That is alright for this pattern. Place the loops of one side of a square onto every other peg of the loom. This will cover the first 12 pegs with alternated spaces. Repeat with one side of the other square on the next 12 pegs. This will stretch the squares into rectangles, which is still okay. The rectangles will be dangling from the outside of the loom. E-wrap all the pegs, double e-wrapping the empty pegs. Knit in the round 1 over 2 for 6 rounds. Next round, knit 2, knit off 2 stitches, knit around. In this round you will knit off bottom 2 stitches from each peg. You have a thumbhole. Flat stitch knit around, adding e-wraps to empty pegs, all around. Flat knit for 10 rounds. Next round, knit 12 stitches off, knit 12. Next round, double e-wrap, knit first 12 stitches, turn, knit back, turn, knit all around. Knit 8 rounds. Knit all stitches off. With yarn needle, sew sides of rectangles together and top closed. Add Velcro strips or buttons to close hand as needed. This way, you can flip your glove open if you need your fingers or closed for warmth! Then I took a slide on some ice last Wednesday. While walking Katie. It was 6:10 a.m. and we had gone three blocks around but were now just across the street from my own home. My right foot slid first. No problem. I went somewhat gently down onto my bad knee. My left foot was still flat on the pavement. So I tried to use it to hold my ground and my right foot to raise myself. But there was no traction to be found. Soon my left knee was also on the ground. Oww. Katie thought I had gone mad. She stayed her distance, as far as the leash would let her. The closest possibility for hefting myself up was a hydrant about 6 feet away. I would never make it on my knees, holding a dog by the leash. So I sat in frosty grass and pulled out my cell phone. Never leave home without one, is now my motto. My sister wasn’t delighted at being wakened at 6:15 a.m. But she’s a trouper. She quickly pulled out her walker (which she has to use for any distance more than a few steps) and headed out the back way. Of course I was in the front of the house but I had neglected to tell her that. All I had said, laughing manically to keep from crying, was “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up. I’ve got Katie and I’m across the street.” So she had to come all around the block to get Katie. She loaned me her walker to get up so I didn’t have to crawl to the hydrant. And she took Katie to finish her walk so I could limp home and get cleaned up. Well, I decided to ensure I always have my cell phone. I only use it about 6 times a year. But it is a valuable tool in a situation such as I just described. So I made a small hand bag for my phone, to carry in my jacket for now. Later I may make one to go around my neck. I made two squares. Squares. *Double e-wrap 6 pegs with color B. Start with a 10-inch tail. Attach 6 loops from one side of a square to the loom so that it is hanging out. Be sure your knit side is facing the outside of the pegs and the purl side is against the pegs. E-wrap the 6 pegs. Knit bottom loops off the pegs. E-wrap and knit across, turn. E-wrap and knit across, turn. Attach 1 side of second square to the 6 pegs, knit off all stitches. Leave a 10-inch tail. The 2 tails will be used to sew up the sides and be tied for a handle. It’s simple, but it matches my gloves for now. And it holds my phone! Note that the squares are slightly different in the gloves and the tote, but only by colors in the rounds!
