Looming Lady Blog
I've been playing around with my cat pattern. It works well, but I decided to try something different. So I made a stand up version. He turned out cute, didn't he? These little buddies hope to make some child smile. I'll post my second pattern on the yarn cats page. Make a few for someone (old or young) who loves cats!

It’s the Christmas season. Make a wreath for advent! Add some candles that you don’t have to light! Since they’ll be made on a loom with yarn, definitely don’t light them! Plus, they save from year to year. Here’s how to make it. For the candles, you need a 12 peg loom, loom hook, and yarn needle. Also, you need 5 small balls of yarn. I used white, purple, and pink yarn for the candles, green for the wreath, and orange for the flames. Double e-wrap all the pegs on the loom and knit row 1. Use the flat stitch to knit one more round. Purl one round, this makes the flat bottom. Knit flat stitch around for 10 rounds. Purl one round. Flat stitch around for 5 more mounds. Cut a long tail, pull the tail through each stitch and pick all the stitches off, drawing the tip closed. With the yarn needle and tail, weave through the tip and sew the tip mostly closed. Leave a large enough hole for the flame. Stuff the candle. With the beginning tail, pull the bottom closed and sew it closed. Weave in all threads. With orange, make a slip stitch on one peg of the loom. E-wrap and knit off twice. You have 2 chains on the peg. Cut a tail, pull the tail through the peg on the loom and lift off the peg. Pull the tail tight. With the yarn needle and the tail, sew the flame onto the tip of the candle. Trim the “wick.” Weave in all threads. For the wreath, I used a 31 peg loom, loom hook and loom needle. I also used small amounts of 3 colors of yarn. E-wrap all the pegs of the 31 peg loom with dark green, or your color choice. Knit in flat stitch for 4 rounds, purl a round, knit in flat stitch 4 rounds. Bring the stitches from the first round up onto the pegs and knit all the stitches off. Use the tails to tie a bow. E-wrap all the pegs of the loom with color one, flat stitch knit around 2 rounds. Change colors by attaching a slip knot and continue knitting for 5 rounds. Cut a long tail, pull it through the stitches and pick off all the stitches, drawing the circle closed. Sew the hole closed and trim your threads. Lay the first piece around the outside of the circle and sew around, sewing the circles together. Cut all threads. If you have never held family advent services, try it. This is a holy time, a joyous time, a time to celebrate. God loves you so much he sent his son to earth to live and die for you and me. Praise him for that. Amen. locomotive and car The car
Two weeks ago I showed how to make the locomotive on the loom. But you may also want something to display candy, decorations, or gifts. Next, you need a candy or toy car for the locomotive to pull. Make 2 or more. Use a 24 peg loom for this. E-wrap all the pegs. Alternate flat stitch rounds with knit rounds for 12 rounds. With tail and yarn needle pick off all stitches and pull closed. Draw the bottom closed in a flat line and seam. See diagram below. Fold down top two rounds. Make the bed – e-wrap all pegs and knit for 25 rounds. Knit off all stitches. Stuff with foam, sew edges closed. Be sure not to pull it tight, like a circle. Sew it lengthwise. Make 2 wheels – with black, e-wrap all pegs and knit 1 round, purl 1 round, knit 1 round. Use large eyed needle to pick off all the stitches and pull closed. Sew 1st round closed. Sew wheels to bed. Hmm. Wonder if there are more parts we can add? We'll have to test and see. Little loomed elephant bookmark
I’m trying to make up fun stocking stuffers, including for my Samaritan’s Purse Operation Shoebox’s. So I made an elephant bookmark on a loom. With a 12 peg loom e-wrap 1 peg. Knit flat 20 rows. E-wrap all the pegs. Knit in the round for 3 rounds. Purl 1 round. Knit 3 rounds. Pick off all stitches with tail running through them, pull closed. With beginning tail, pull first row closed. Secure face circle and trunk. For ears e-wrap all pegs, knit 1 round, purl 1 round, knit a round, pick off all stitches with tail running through them, pull closed. Sew 1st round closed. Make 2 ears, sew to upper sides of head. Sew button eyes or make buttons to suit yourself. A Holiday train on the loom I’ve been working on holiday projects, as I’m sure most of you are. I thought I’d produce something a little different for the season. Well, actually I decided on something that’s popular, on a loom. So I made a train set. Here’s what I made so far. The locomotive is made on a twelve peg loom. I used a small gauge 12 peg loom but the flower loom can work as well – the locomotive will be larger on the flower loom. Beside your loom, you’ll need a loom hook, a large eyed needle, a piece of flat foam, and stuffing. E-wrap all the pegs and flat knit in the round for 4 rounds. Purl 1 round. This makes the back of the locomotive body. Flat knit for 15 rounds. Purl 1 round. Flat knit for 5 rounds. With a large eyed needle pick the stitches off and pull closed. Use the tail to sew around round 25 to create the nose of the locomotive. Or is it the lamp? For the top – e-wrap all the pegs and flat knit 4 rounds, purl 1 round and flat knit 1 round. Use the large eyed needle to pick off an close the last round. This makes a flat top. Use the beginning tail and large eyed needle to pull the 1st round closed and seam to the top of the locomotive body on round 16. For the grail e-wrap 6 pegs, flat knit 4 rows, knit off all stitches. Seam to front of locomotive body. It will hang over the front of the train bed. For the smokestack behind – cast on all pegs, knit 4 rounds, purl 1 round, knit 15 rounds, knit off all stitches. Insert stuffing. Use a contrasting color for top. Cast on all pegs, knit 5 rounds. Pick off the stitches of round 5 and pull closed. Sew the top to the body of the smoke stack. Be sure to leave an overhang around the top. Make the bed – e-wrap all pegs and knit for 25 rounds. Knit off all stitches. Stuff with foam, sew edges closed. Make 4 wheels – with black, e-wrap all pegs and knit 1 round, purl 1 round, knit 1 round. Use large eyed needle to pick off all the stitches and pull closed. Sew 1st round closed. Sew wheels to bed. Sew wheels to bed. Sew locomotive on front end of bed, sew the smokestack behind. Weave in all loose threads. Notice the loose thread on the grail? I didn't before the picture! Oh, well, I have it weaved in now. In my “A Looming Lady” series, Kate is a designer of loomed things. She does much of her looming based on need. To supply her house and give gifts she must make them. She is a fictional character. However, I suspect some of her basic instincts are built from my own knowledge, skills, and abilities. I like looming because I can create fun and useful things. These little loomed bears are more fun than useful, of course.
I get a lot of looming ideas from needle knit and crochet projects. I can do both, and enjoy them. But it’s fun to try doing them in a different method. So I made the pink crochet bear, then the blue loomed bear. The patterns will be posted on my http://myyarncraftsplus.weebly.com/charity-patterns.html page because I hope to make a batch for charity – to put into shoeboxes. Do you know of any good charities for these little bears?
In honor of Easter I decided to make up some hats for charity. I’ve got one made up this weekend – I hope to make 4 more this week. We’ll see how it goes. This hat was simple, but I hope someone will enjoy it’s warmth and cheerful stripes. Here how I did it. I used an adult Knifty Knitter loom with 36 pegs and orange and black yarn. The project also requires a loom hook and yarn needle. You will learn how to change colors and also how to make vertical stripes. Are you ready? E-wrap each peg 3 times around. Rounds 1 -15, knit bottom loop over top 2 loops around. Cut a long tail of color A. Round 16, attach color B and e-wrap each peg around. As you wrap, carry your tail of A over the stitches. See the picture below for an example. This weaves in the old color behind the new color. Knit bottom loop over top 2 loops around. Rounds 17-20, e-wrap each peg around, knit bottom loop over top 2 loops around. Cut color B. Round 21, attach color A and e-wrap each peg around, carrying your tail of color B around. Knit bottom loop over top 2 loops around. Rounds 22-30, e-wrap each peg around, knit bottom loop over top 2 loops around. Round 31, attach color B and e-wrap each peg around, carrying your tail of color A around. Knit bottom loop over top 2 loops around. Rounds 32-35, e-wrap each peg around, knit bottom loop over top 2 loops around. Cut a long tail. Round 36, attach color A and e-wrap each peg around, carrying your tail of color B around. Knit bottom loop over top 2 loops around. Rounds 37 -39, e-wrap each peg around, knit bottom loop over top 2 loops around. Round 40, wrap each peg around, lift 2 bottom loops over top loop. 1 loop on each peg. Round 50, cut long tail. Using the yarn needle, pull tail through the loop on each peg and lift off, drawing the circle closed. Secure the tail carefully, over sewing all around. Trim all threads. With color B, e-wrap 1 peg and knit 30 stitches. Cast off, leaving a long tail. This will create a chain. Make 4. Use the yarn needle and weave the chain vertically (upward) to the top loop. Bring your needle down the back of the last loop and up through the front, creating a slip stitch. Repeat at the bottom with your beginning tail. Repeat every 9 stitches apart. Trim the bottom threads. Take 4 threads in color b and tie each thread around the top loop between each vertical chain. Use a single thread to tie the top tails and ties closed. Trim the pompom you just created. Enjoy. How to change colors.
A Simple Loomed Case I got tired of my old diabetic kit case and made up a new one this week. Yes, I'm diabetic, like characters in all my books. So I carry a kit where ever I go. It holds my meter, lancet, test strips and insulin pen. I can put in a logbook as well. Not diabetic? You can use this case for anything by adjusting the pockets and straps. Try making it into a cosmetic case, for example. Here’s what you need for this project. A 24 peg loom, loom hook, yarn needle and less than half a skein of yarn. What you need to know for this project: e-wrap, double e-wrap, knit 1 over 2, purl, knit off. Round 1: Double e-wrap all pegs. Wrap each peg and knit 1 loop over top 2 loops all around. Turn. Now you will start seed stitch. Rows 2 -19: Skip 1st peg, * knit bottom loop over top loop and then purl on next peg, e-wrap and knit bottom loop over top loops, repeat around from *. Turn. Do not turn on row 19. Row 20: E-wrap and Knit 1 over 2 loops all around. Row 21: E-wrap and knit 2 over 1 all around. Row 22: Knit all stitches off. Knit last stitch one more time to create a loop at the end. Sew ends closed with tails. Weave in all tails. For inside pockets and flaps: For meter pocket, double e-wrap 7 pegs. Knit flat for 12 rows. Knit off all stitches. Sew to middle of inside of pouch. I also e-wrapped 1 peg and knit for 22 rows, then knit off. I pulled to chain through the middle of the back side, under the meter pocket, and then downwards, through the pocket to help secure the meter. I made a second chain of 1 stitch 22 rows and wove it through the center to create side loops for the test strips and lancet. For the back strap, double e-wrap 4 pegs and knit flat 24 rows. Knit off all stitches. Sew to each end of each side, leaving it open to hold little notepads and pens if desired. I was thinking of valentines day this week. So I made this heart charm. I'm going to add a loop to put it on a bracelet. Here's how I made it.
heart charm size: about 1 1/2 in high, 2 inches around at base. what you need: size 4 steel hook, small amount of size 10 cotton yarn in the color of your choice, yarn needle. what you need to know: chain (ch), slip stitch (ss), single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc), triple crochet (tc), decrease sc (single crochet 2 stitches together) gauge: 3 sc = ½ inch, 3 rows = 1 inch Chain 2. Make 5 single crochet in 2nd chain from hook. Slip stitch to top of 1st sc. Round 2: Chain 1, sc in same stitch, sc twice in each sc around. Join with as to back loop only of 1st sc in round 1. Round 3: Working in back loops only, sc around. 10 sc. Join with as to first sc. Round 4: decrease sc around, 5 sc done. Very lightly stuff base. Round 5: Chain 2, sc in same stitch, sc in next stitch. *2 sc in next stitch, sc in next around. 8 scs done. Join with ss to first stitch in round. Rounds 8: sc in 1st stitch (attachment stitch) and each sc around. Ss to top of first round. 9 sc done.
